Finding the right home business or Network Marketing Company takes a little bit of work on your part. The number 1 priority, and should be at the top of the list is to find something, a service or a product you are passionate about. It should always be about what you like and what you will enjoy doing. It should also be about a product or service that you would use or take, even if you were not going to recommend it or distribute it to someone else. If you are passionate about a service or product it is much easier to present or share with others.
There is not doubt about a home business or network marketing company being sales. It is. But if you are passionate about the service or product, the company and the leadership it will seem less like sales and more about sharing. It’s like recommending a restaurant to a friend. You enjoyed the food, the service and you want your friend to have the same great experience you had.
I have compiled a list of suggestions that you should investigate before you start a home based business or join a network marketing company.
1. Be passionate about the service or product. Would you use it, buy it, and recommend it even if you were not involved with the business?
2. Is the company a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) and are they in good standing? The cornerstone of the DSA is the commitment to ethical business practices and consumer services through its Code of Ethics. Every member company pledges to abide by the code’s standards and procedures as a condition of admission and continuing membership in DSA.
The DSA Code of Ethics speaks to both the consumer and the seller. It ensures that member companies will make no statements or promises that might mislead either consumers or prospective sales people. Pyramid schemes are illegal and companies operating pyramids are not permitted to be members of the DSA. Direct Selling Association
3. Are they a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and are they in good standing? If a business has been accredited by the BBB, it means BBB has determined that the business meets accreditation standards which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. Better Business Bureau
4. Start up cost. How much will you need to start your own business? Unlike franchise companies, which can cost into the MILLION’s of dollars to purchase, most network marketing companies generally have low start up costs. There are hundreds of companies that offer start-up costs of under $500.00. When looking at start-up costs, it is often wise to look at how much do you need to sell or how many people you would need to recruit into your business to make your money back. Don’t look at how much time it will take, because time depends on how seriously an individual wants to build their business. Ask yourself, how many businesses can you start at home for less than $500.00?
5. What is the monthly cost for you to remain active in the company and earn commissions? Most network marketing companies require you to have an auto shipment each month to remain qualified as an active distributor and collect commissions and monthly residual income from the company. These monthly requirements can range from a few dollars per month to hundreds of dollars per month. A question you might want to ask yourself, will I use the product or service every month, even if I do not make any money that month? Is it affordable to me if I don’t make any money that month?
6. What is the company’s return policy? Is it in writing?
7. What is the compensation plan? Is it in writing? Is there a good residual income? Is the compensation plan clearly spelled out? Is it understandable? Is it front end loaded, meaning you get paid more on the front end of a sale and less in residual income (built over time)? Are there leaders that have achieved the top level? Compensation plans that reward only on the recruiting of new people and not on the sale of the product or service to the consumer, will be focused exclusively on recruiting new distributors and not selling the product or service.
8. Company Training. Does the company offer training? What type of training? Is there any cost? Does the training produce a successful distributor?
9. Is the company solvent? Can they meet their financial obligations? Do they pay their distributors on time?
10. How long has the company been in business? 5 years or longer is a good average. Start up companies can be successful, however there is greater risk of failure.
11. What are the intentions of the company’s owners? Owners that have a vision for the long term will most likely be successful. A company that has short-term vision of making several million dollars and then selling the company to investors most likely will not be a good choice. Ask why the owner started the company and what their vision is for the company, both short term and long term.
12. Is the company privately held? In a publicly trade MLM company they have a “fiduciary duty” to the shareholder of the company instead of the distributors. Share holders may demand increasing stock value and if this demand results in reducing the amount of commission paid to distributors, the death of the company may be just around the corner.
13. Is the company growing? Did they have more sales this year than last year.
14. Does the company sell directly to the consumer? What you should be looking for is that the company only sells the product or service through a distributor and they are the customers of the distributor.
15. Is the product or service of value to the consumer? If the product or service is of value to the consumer, then distributors will enjoy selling them because the consumer will be more enthusiastic about the product or service. This also makes it easier to recruit new people and turn customers into distributors. It should make the consumer’s life better or easier. Are there a lot of customers that want to buy the product or service?
16. Is the product or service competitively priced? Over priced products or services that can be purchased by a consumer, of similar type, for less money will be harder to sell. Does the consumer see the value in your product or service?
17. Your Sponsor. Is this their full-time business? How long have they been in this business? What is their network marketing experience. Is the person that wants you to become a distributor with them capable of leading you, training, helping you with training others? Are they going to be there for you or are they going to ignore you once you have signed on with them? These are important questions to ask before you join any network marketing company. Remember, you can have the best trainer/sponsor, but if you don’t produce they can’t make you successful, only you control that.
18. What is the competition of the product or service? Are there other network marketing companies that sell a similar product or service? What is the niche market of the product or service?
19. Do the company owners see their distributors as their most important asset?
20. Does the company listen to suggestions from its leaders? Do they implement suggestions from their leaders? Do they communicate with the leadership of the company? Do they have a “leadership council” that meet monthly, quarterly or semi-annually?
When you are looking to start your own home based business, look at it just like you were interviewing for a new job, ask a lot of questions, try the product or service and do your homework. To find out more, Click Here
